October Fishing in Oklahoma

There are two things that go hand in hand in October, and that is Eastern Oklahoma and bass fishing.  Fall bass fishing is in full swing right now.  Crankbaits, jig-and-plastic combinations, along with Carolina-rigged soft-plastics are some of the best lures to land fall bass.  McCurtain County, in Southeastern Oklahoma, provides some excellent small mouth bass fishing.  The Mountain Fork and Glover Rivers can produce some excellent fishing as well.

In the fall the bass tend to pull away from the bank and stay in water depths of around 5 to 20 feet.  Cold fronts play a huge role in the activity of the fish.  Depending on whether it’s a pre, or post cold front situation, the behavior of the fish is directly affected.  This is where your crankbaits and Carolina-rigs play a huge role in landing the post-cold front bass.  A great location to try out these lures is Grand Lake.  This is one of our favorite spots here at OkieSurf for the fishing and awesome summertime entertainment.  Grand Lake also provides some good duck hunting.  Anyway, back to the point at hand.  This lake produces large numbers of bass and most of them are very healthy in size.

There are several other locations in eastern Oklahoma such as lake Hudson and Fort Gibson.  Some other good spots outside of Tulsa are the Newt Graham, Chouteau, and Webber lakes.  All of these lakes are fantastic locations to catch fall bass.  The list goes on and on for excellent fisheries in eastern Oklahoma.  The previous mentioned spots are some of our favorites, but you can’t go wrong if you head east.  So, if you get a free weekend when the Sooners aren’t playing, try and plan a little trip out to the east and get some good fishing in while the weather is still good.
